One Panel, Two Worlds
#

Most spaces have to choose: either you get good, clean white light for work — or you get flashy color effects for video and atmosphere. We wanted both. So for our own meeting room in Bratislava, we built a 3×3 m square LED panel that does exactly that.

One button press gives you calm, neutral white light. Another switches you into full pixel LED mode — animated colors, effects, and the kind of visual energy you’d expect from a TV studio backdrop or an influencer setup.

The Construction
#

The panel is made from aluminum LED profiles measuring 5×3 cm. The bottom face is sealed with a quality diffuser that scatters the light evenly before it reaches the room.

The 3 cm profile depth is a deliberate choice. It’s the sweet spot where the light from adjacent LEDs has enough room to blend together before hitting the diffuser — so what you see is a smooth, continuous surface, not a row of individual bright dots. Too shallow, and the dots show through. Too deep, and you lose intensity. Three centimeters works.

Two Types of LED Strip Inside
#

Inside each profile section, we installed two completely separate LED strips running side by side:

  • 6000K white LED strip — a cool daylight white, ideal for reading, focused work, meetings, or mini training sessions where you need proper visibility
  • WS2815 pixel LED strip, 60 LEDs/m — a fully addressable LED strip capable of running dynamic color effects, animations, and anything your pixel LED controller sends its way

The WS2815 is a solid choice for professional installations. It runs on 12V, has a backup data line (so one dead LED won’t kill the rest of the strip), and responds cleanly to SPI control at 60 pixels per meter — fine enough resolution that the effects look smooth from any normal viewing distance.

Where It Actually Gets Used

The combo of everyday white light and on-demand pixel effects isn’t just a novelty. It solves a real problem in several types of spaces.

Meeting rooms and boardrooms — you can greet a client with their brand colors, then switch to clean white for the actual discussion. It’s a small detail that lands harder than most people expect.

Fitness studios — more and more gyms are using pixel LED installations during circuit training, evening classes, or the occasional workout-plus-party crossover event. White for the day shift, effects for the vibe shift.

Retail and showrooms — getting someone to walk into your space requires catching their eye first. Dynamic LED ceiling installations do that job without requiring a screen or a projection setup.

Home TV studios and content creator spaces — video quality is directly tied to lighting quality. The better the light, the further the video travels. A digital LED strip ceiling that can shift from clean white to moody color to energetic effects gives a solo creator tools that used to require a full production crew.

Shape Isn’t Fixed
#

We went with a square because it fits our conservative office design. But the same aluminum profiles and addressable LED strip logic works in rectangles, triangles, or completely custom geometric arrangements. If you want a fragmented ceiling installation with random segments and angles, that’s buildable too. The profile system is modular — the shape is just a design decision.

Control Options
#

For normal daily use, the whole panel switches on and off with a simple remote. That covers the white light mode for meetings, and basic color presets.

When someone wants more, a mobile app (iOS and Android) lets you browse and trigger pixel effects — color cycles, reactive animations, static color washes.

For integrated smart-home or commercial setups, the controller supports HTTP commands. That means you can hook the panel into a Crestron system, a home automation hub, or any platform that can send a basic network request. One HTTP call to change scene, no manual input needed.

The Bigger Picture
#

Pixel LED installations used to be something you’d only see in clubs, TV sets, or high-budget stage productions. That’s changing fast. The cost of WS2815 LED strip, aluminum profiles, and a capable LED pixel controller has dropped far enough that the technology makes sense for boardrooms, fitness studios, retail spaces, and home setups alike.

Our 3×3 m demo panel is proof that you don’t have to sacrifice practical white light to get the effects. You just need to build for both from the start.

Why put two separate LED strips in one profile instead of using a single RGBW strip?

An SK6812 RGBW strip can produce white light, but it’s a compromise — the white channel is useful for color mixing but doesn’t match the output quality of a dedicated white LED strip tuned to a specific color temperature. For a meeting room, 6000K white light from a proper white LED strip is noticeably cleaner and more consistent than white generated through an RGBW pixel. Running two strips side by side — one dedicated white, one WS2815 pixel — means each one is optimized for its job. The diffuser blends them visually from below.

What makes WS2815 a good choice for a meeting room installation?

The WS2815 LED strip has a few features that matter in a permanent installation. It runs on 12V, which reduces voltage drop over longer runs compared to 5V strips. More importantly, it has a backup data line — if one LED in the chain fails, the signal jumps over it and the rest of the strip keeps running. For a ceiling panel you don’t want to take apart for minor repairs, that redundancy is worth a lot. The 60 LEDs/m density also gives smooth effect rendering without the cost of a denser strip.

How does the 3 cm profile depth affect the light output?

The diffuser works by mixing the light from adjacent LEDs before it exits the profile. For that mixing to happen, the LEDs need to be far enough from the diffuser surface — and that distance is approximately 3 cm. Below that, the light cones don’t overlap enough, and you can resolve individual bright points through the diffuser. At 3 cm, the cones merge into a continuous band. This is the same principle used in any backlit diffuser system, and it applies regardless of whether you’re using a white LED strip or an addressable LED strip for pixel effects.

Can the panel be controlled without a smartphone or dedicated app?

Yes. The simplest control is a basic remote that handles on/off and preset scenes — no phone, no app, no network required. For anyone who wants to go further, the mobile app unlocks the full range of pixel effects. And for building automation or commercial setups, the controller responds to HTTP commands, so any smart-home platform or control system that can send a network request can trigger scene changes automatically. You pick the level of control that fits the space.

What other shapes can this type of LED panel take?

The square is just one option. The same aluminum LED profile system works for rectangles, triangles, hexagons, and fully custom geometric layouts. The profiles are cut and joined at the required angles, the LED strips run inside, and the diffuser is applied along the bottom face. For spaces that want something more architectural — fragmented ceiling segments, asymmetric shapes, or a layout that follows the room geometry — the construction method scales to fit. The control system doesn’t care about the shape; it just sees a strip of pixels.

Is this type of combined white and pixel lighting practical for a fitness studio?

It works well. Gyms and fitness studios need solid white light for normal classes and daily operation. But there’s a growing trend toward using pixel LED installations for evening sessions, circuit training with music, or the occasional event format that blurs the line between workout and party. A panel that can switch between clean white and dynamic color effects handles both use cases from the same fixture. The HTTP control option also means the lighting mode can change automatically on a schedule — white during the day, effects in the evening — without anyone touching an app.
