A Small Club With a Big Heart #
Some of the best venues in any city aren’t the biggest ones. This club sits right in the heart of Bratislava — a compact space with a real personality. The client already had a solid lighting rig in place: moving heads, lasers, traditional fixtures. But they wanted to go one step further. They wanted the walls themselves to light up and become part of the show.
Our task was to add a new layer of pixel LED installation — architectural LED strips built directly into the structure — and tie everything together into one unified visual experience that responds to the music in real time.
The Design: Recessed Aluminum Profiles in Drywall #
The client had a clear vision: modern, minimal, and clean. No bulky fixtures, no visible hardware. The solution was to recess aluminum LED mounting profiles into a new layer of drywall panels applied over the existing walls. From the outside, you see a clean, flush surface. The light appears to come from within the wall itself.
Here’s where it got technical. The drywall boards are only 15mm thick — that doesn’t leave much room for a standard profile. We chose a 12mm aluminum profile combined with COB pixel strips. COB strips are ideal for tight installations like this: even without the recommended 30mm gap between LEDs and the diffuser, there are no visible individual hot spots or dots. The light comes out smooth and even. The pixel density is 20 pixels per meter, giving enough resolution for fluid, detailed animations across the surface. For even better results, you can use higher resolution, but at the cost of increased budget.
The Real Challenge: An Old Building #
Working in a historic building sounds romantic — until you pull out your measuring tape.
In this building, no wall runs perfectly straight, and no two panels are the same size. You simply can’t cut boards in the workshop and expect them to fit. So we developed a custom workflow: measure every section precisely on-site, cut each drywall board to its exact dimensions, and only then bring them to our workshop to mill the LED channels. Each board was unique. Every channel had to match the proposed design — a clean, geometric pattern that works with the architecture rather than fighting it.
The milling itself had to be precise. The channels needed to seat the 12mm aluminum profiles flush with the board surface so that after painting, everything looks like it was always meant to be there.
The full LED pixel installation — drywall fabrication, channel milling, profile placement, COB strip mounting, and all wiring — took five days on-site.
Programming the Effects with LSS3 #
With the hardware done, the next phase was programming. We used LED Strip Studio (LSS3) to build all the effects and map the pixel layout across the space. The addressable LED strips were mapped as a 2D pixel layout, letting us run effects that flow across the walls like a single continuous canvas.
All effects were synchronized with the existing lighting rig — moving heads and lasers included. The goal was one show, not separate systems running in parallel.
The client had one specific request: they wanted the spectrogram feature in LSS3. This is a built-in function in the LED pixel mapping software that listens to a live audio source and automatically generates light animations in response to what’s playing — a real-time, music-driven light show. Every beat, every bass drop, every breakdown gets translated into motion and color across the walls.
To make it work, we needed a clean audio signal from the DJ setup. The club uses a Pioneer XDJ-XZ mixing station, which has several audio outputs. After testing, the Booth output turned out to be the best choice — stable, clean, and reliable night after night. It feeds directly into the LSS3 software and drives the spectrogram without any issues.
The Result #
The finished space feels completely different from what it was before. The pixel strips wash the walls with color that reacts to every beat and every mood of the music. Combined with the moving heads and lasers, the room becomes a single visual system — not just lights mounted on a ceiling, but an environment that moves and breathes with the music.

You need a slim profile that fits within the board thickness. In this project, we used a 12mm aluminum profile recessed into milled channels cut into 15mm drywall boards. The channels are milled to the exact depth so the profile sits flush with the board surface. After painting, the installation is completely clean — the only visible element is the diffused light coming from the wall.
How do you handle LED installation in an old building with uneven walls?
You can’t cut everything to standard dimensions in the workshop and expect it to fit. For recessed wall profiles where the diffuser is close to the LEDs, a density of 20 pixels per meter gives smooth, fluid animations without visible stepping between pixels. At this density, combined with a COB strip, the light blends well even at close diffuser distances. For longer viewing distances or larger scale installations, lower densities can work fine — but for architectural details at close range, 20px/m is a solid baseline.
