Advertising That Moves With You #
Good advertising is important for every business — even one that makes pancakes. At festivals and outdoor events, dozens of food trucks line up next to each other. If yours doesn’t stand out, people walk past it. That’s the problem the owner of this pancake food truck wanted to solve.
After a consultation, we recommended using COB LED pixel strips mounted in aluminum profiles along the exterior of the caravan. Why? Because animated light simply draws more eyes. A moving, colorful display catches attention in a way that a static sign never will. This is especially true in the evening, when the competition is lit by nothing more than a standard work light.
Why COB Instead of Regular Pixel LED #
The caravan came with one real constraint: the mounting space was very thin. To keep the installation clean and road-legal, we could only attach slim aluminum profiles to the vehicle’s exterior.
A standard addressable LED pixel strip requires a profile depth of at least 3 cm. On a moving vehicle, that would stick out too far — it would look rough and could be a hazard.
COB LED strips (chip-on-board) are different. The LEDs are packed densely along a narrow board, which means we could use profiles less than 1 cm thick. Same animated pixel effect, much smaller footprint. For a mobile caravan, this was the right call.
The Installation #
We did the installation on a sunny day at our garden. It turned out to be more involved than we initially expected.
The aluminum profiles had to be precisely cut to length and then riveted directly onto the caravan body. Each section needed to line up cleanly — both for appearance and to make sure the strips were protected. Once the profiles were in place, we inserted the COB LED pixel strips into them.
The whole system is a proper pixel LED installation: each LED position is individually addressable, which means the controller can run smooth animations, color chases, and transitions across the entire surface of the vehicle.
Standalone Control With SPI Matrix #
The client needed something simple. No laptop, no external computer — just a controller that works reliably at every festival, every time.
We used an SPI Matrix standalone LED controller, which stores all the lighting effects on an SD card. The owner switches between different color animations using physical buttons on the unit. That’s it. No phone app, no software, no setup process on site.
This is exactly the kind of plug and play LED system that works well in practical, real-world conditions. The client presses a button, picks an effect, and the caravan starts drawing attention.

The Result #
The food truck owner was very happy with the outcome. The caravan now lights up at events with smooth, animated color effects running along its exterior. It stands out from neighboring vendors and invites customers to take a second look.

COB strips can be driven as an addressable LED strip using an SPI pixel controller, but they fit into much thinner mounting profiles — under 1 cm versus 3 cm or more for standard pixel strips.
