Let’s be honest: when someone emails us to say they put our controllers in a moving stage on a 12-ton truck for a desert festival in South Africa, our only possible response is yes, please tell us more.

This project was built by one of our customers for Afrikaburn — the South African member of the global Burning Man Regional Network, held annually in the Tankwa Karoo desert in the Western Cape. Same founding principles as Burning Man, same spirit of radical creativity and self-reliance, completely different landscape. And apparently, the same magnetic pull toward building enormous impractical things in the desert.


The Setup: A Stage That Moves

The idea was simple in the way that all great impractical ideas are simple: take a 12-ton truck, mount a fully operational performance stage on it, drive it through an arts festival in the desert, and light the whole thing up with addressable LEDs.

The truck chassis provided the structural foundation. Everything above it — the stage platform, rigging, LED installations, and control systems — was custom-built specifically for this project. The result is a stage that goes where it wants to go, sets up wherever it stops, and performs wherever the crowd gathers. It’s the kind of build that only makes sense at an event like Afrikaburn, which means it makes complete sense.

The Custom Controller Case

Here’s the detail that caught our attention: alongside the stage build, the customer fabricated a completely custom enclosure to house the LED Strip Studio controllers and power supplies.

This is not the usual approach. Most people bolt a controller to a surface and call it done. Building a dedicated case — with controllers, PSUs, and cabling all laid out together in a purpose-built housing — takes more time upfront and pays for itself many times over once the project is actually running.

In a desert festival environment, the case earns its keep immediately. Dust is the enemy of electronics, and the Tankwa Karoo has dust in heroic quantities. Vibration from driving the truck across rough terrain is another concern. Having the entire control system sealed, protected, and mechanically isolated inside a well-built enclosure means one less thing to worry about while managing a live stage in the middle of nowhere.

What are the biggest technical challenges of running LED controllers on a moving vehicle?

The main challenges are vibration, dust, and power stability. Vibration can shake loose connectors and stress solder joints over time — mechanical isolation of the controller and secure cable strain relief are essential. Dust infiltrating an unprotected enclosure will eventually cause shorts or connection failures — a sealed, well-gasketed case (or at minimum a regularly cleaned enclosure) is a must. Power from a generator or vehicle electrical system can also be less stable than mains power, so a controller that handles input voltage variation cleanly matters. A purpose-built enclosure like the one in this project directly addresses all three issues at once.

Why build a custom enclosure instead of buying an off-the-shelf case?

Off-the-shelf enclosures come in standard sizes for standard hardware. A custom case can be designed around your specific controllers, power supplies, and cable routing — which means shorter internal runs, a cleaner layout, and exactly the access points you actually need. For a mobile installation on a working vehicle, a case that’s sized and organized for this exact build also speeds up setup and teardown significantly. When you’re parking a 12-ton truck at a festival and need the stage operational quickly, knowing exactly where every connector is — because you designed it that way — saves real time.

Can LED Strip Studio controllers run as standalone units without a connected computer?

Yes. Once programmed and loaded with animations, the controllers operate independently — no laptop, no live network connection required. This is essential for a vehicle-mounted stage where running a computer continuously isn’t practical. Pre-show, you load your sequences and configure your settings; during the event, the controllers run autonomously and can be triggered or switched via the network if needed. For a festival environment where the crew has a lot of other things to manage, a self-sufficient control system is a significant advantage over one that requires constant supervision.

What should you think about when planning LED for an outdoor desert festival?

The desert is hard on electronics in specific ways: fine dust gets into everything, temperatures swing dramatically between day and night, and you’re operating far from any technical support if something goes wrong. Practical steps: use a sealed enclosure for all control electronics, choose IP65 or IP67 rated LED strips for any exposed runs, plan power injection to handle the voltage drop that comes with long cable runs, and test the full system before you arrive on site. Pre-testing in the actual environment — or as close to it as you can manage — is the single most effective thing you can do to prevent surprises at a remote location event.
