Project Quick Facts
LED facade lighting is now a common feature of modern architecture. When properly designed, it can highlight a building’s shape, improve its navigational function, and enable dynamic lighting effects. One example of such a solution is our project for LED lighting of an office building in Tallinn.
The project was among the more technically challenging implementations, primarily due to its scope and remote collaboration with the client.
Design of the LED Facade System #
The architectural design of the building was fixed, so it was not possible to use universal LED profiles. The solution was custom-designed for the facade.
The solution included:
- a specially designed aluminum profile
- concealed routing of power and data cables
- a structure suitable for outdoor use
The goal was to achieve a clean look without visible technical elements.

We had to precisely design a printed circuit board with LEDs and the cable branching for the selected LED profile. Everything was custom-made to meet the client’s technical and design requirements.

Powering the LED facade over long distances #
The LED facade lighting consisted of long light lines with a total length of approximately 50 meters. A stable power supply is a key factor for this type of installation.
Basic parameters:
- 32 LEDs / meter
- approximately 10 W / meter
- high current load at low voltage
We used a 24 V power supply with local voltage reduction to 5 V using DC-DC converters, which enabled:
- the use of thin cables
- easier installation
- stable voltage along the entire length of the LED line
Control of LED facade lighting #
The LED system is controlled by LED Strip Studio, which is designed for large-scale LED installations. The system allows for:
- creation of lighting scenes
- time-based lighting control
- color and animation changes
For data transmission over longer distances, a symmetrical SPI interface was used, which ensures reliable signal transmission even at lengths exceeding 20 meters.
Implementation and Installation #
Given the distance between the implementation team and the site, a complete installation package was chosen:
- pre-assembled LED profiles
- pre-wired cable harnesses
- control units
- technical documentation
The actual installation was carried out by a local team based on the provided documentation.

Lessons Learned from the LED Façade Lighting Project #
The project required extensive preparation, multiple technical designs, and solution testing. This resulted in practical experience in the following areas:
- design of LED facade systems
- powering long LED lines
- outdoor data communication
- remote collaboration on technically demanding projects
We now apply this knowledge when designing LED facade lighting for buildings, including office buildings, commercial structures, and public spaces.

All of this development ultimately led us to create the complete ProfiLED facade system. This system addresses all the challenges we encountered during the Tallinn project:
- efficient power and signal distribution,
- simpler and faster LED line maintenance,
- sophisticated mechanical and electrical wiring of LED bars,
- optimized solutions for long LED segments and outdoor conditions.
Thanks to ProfiLED, it is possible to implement large-scale LED facade lighting for buildings more efficiently, more reliably, and with minimal risk of complications during installation and operation.
