Technical Details #
First, a few technical details—to control 24 meters of digital LED strip, we used a single LEC3 device designed for controlling smart LED strips. It’s basically a smarter LED dimmer. To achieve impressive lighting, we used an LED strip containing 60 LEDs per meter (WS2811 diode type).
To power this many strips, we needed three 5V power supplies. We hid these, along with the controller, under the drywall ceiling. In that same drywall, we had to cut out openings for aluminum rails, into which we then firmly glued the strips with silicone. To cover them, we used only a very thin plastic diffuser.
LED strips in a drywall ceiling #
The most complicated part—cutting precise holes in the drywall for the channels. Internally, we named this project “Nine Crosses”. That’s exactly how many times the strips—and thus the aluminum channels—crossed on the ceiling. And cutting the channels at precise angles so they’d fit together nicely at the intersections? To be honest, it was a bit of a nightmare :) .
Including prep work, the entire installation took us about a week. Inserting the strips with the strips into the ceiling took about 2 days; you can see the rest in the time-lapse video above (if you happen to see a member of the ledinštalácie.sk team twice, it’s not a glitch in your receiver).
Synchronized with music #
The only thing missing for perfection was a show synchronized with music so we could wow our guests. Richi from our company TRON EVENT AGENCY, which specializes in dance performances with LED costumes, took care of that.
